Here are a few of our favorite things…

6 Feb

No, not raindrops on roses or whiskers on kittens (we are more of a dog-friendly family anyway)….it’s more like pork fat on crostinis and schnitzel with cabbage.

Aside from the food items, here are a few of our favorite things that we love to use in the kitchen:

Bench Scrape: From peeling off cookie dough from your counter, to cleaning up in one fell swoop, this is a great item to have in your arsenal.

A good quality pizza wheel: We use this to cleanly cut our homemade pizza pies, easily cut pancakes for the kid (I am the WORST knife/fork cutter ever) and chop herbs (works wonders on rosemary).

Pizza Stone: Although pizza’s are typically round, get a square one because you will be able to use it for more things, i.e. baking bread, chicken wings, etc. They also can be used on your grill as well.

Bacon Press: What is worse than curled up, unevenly cooked bacon?!? Nothing I tell you, nothing! That’s why you need one of these. Totally awesome and will make you Master of the Bacon. People will come from all over the world to marvel at your bacon. Or not. You don’t really want strangers in your house anyway.

Chopsticks for beginners: No, our 2 1/2 year old doesn’t use these. The big 6 foot 3 inch, bearded man that resides in our house does (that sounds like there is a strange man living here. There isn’t. It’s just Chris. And he thinks I’m the strange one just to clarify). And he loves them.

Tell us what your favorite kitchen gadget is! We would love to hear from you.

Parchment Paper!!! Makes clean up a breeze. My cookies come out perfect every time. I also use it to bake wings and meatballs. The meat doesn’t stick to the pan and you cut out the extra oil you would normally use to coat the pan.

We love parchment paper too! We just discovered some that is foil on one side, parchment on the other. It’s amazing.

I love small electronic kitchen gadgets. My all time favorite has to be my Sunbeam Oskar Food Processor/Chopper, model 14081. It is a two cup capacity. A Christmas gift that my future mother in law gave me over 25 years ago. I still use use it to this very day. It grates and slices all sorts cheese & veggies. It’s great for crumbling things evenly, like oreo cookies, nuts, cooked chopped meat, sausage, etc. If you make salsa or guacamole, it’s a must! I actually used it today to chop the plum tomatoes for my sauce. Honorable mention goes to the crock pot. The depth of flavor that develops effortlessly in this gadget has blogs dedicated exclusively to it’s greatness. You throw all your ingredients in one pot, come back in 4-8 hours and dinner is ready!
